That night Arianna had dreams of an immense desert lined by a cluster of black on the horizon, shimmering in the hot sun. As she looked closer, she saw the unmistakable form of Skulks looking exactly the way Alessar had described them: each one ready for battle, ready for blood and ready to kill the unprepared town that lay in its wake. This dream repeated itself over and over again so that Arianna’s sleep became quickly disturbed and restless.

When she woke the next morning, she decided against sharing this dream with Alessar, not knowing how he would react. She had a feeling mockery might be his first response. Besides, Alessar had not cared much for what Mr. Robin had reported and he certainly wouldn’t care for her opinion, especially not the second time around.

Alessar was packing up the map and the other instruments he had been using the previous night. “Are we leaving today?” she asked him.

He didn’t stop to look at her but continued packing his bag. “Yes. I was hoping we would leave as soon as possible. We are so close to Mount Cerberus.”

“Mount Cerberus?”

“Yes, the mountain that we have to climb in order to get to Vadamore. The bridge that we need to cross to get to the tree is near the peak. Once we leave the city, you’ll be able to see it; it’s not that far from here. Actually, we’ll probably be halfway to the top by sundown if we get out of here quickly.” He pulled the map out of the bag and unravelled it in front of Arianna, pointing to the mountain. She traced the bridge to the tree with her gaze.

“Long bridge,” she groaned.

“Yes. It takes a long time to cross, especially on foot.”

“Wait, we’re not taking the horses?” she asked, confused.

“Actually, I arranged for Din to be used as a rental to Alverden and back. It’s nothing too risky for him and we needed the extra money,” he explained. Arianna thought of the poor horse and hoped no danger would come to him in their absence.

Her stomach began to grumble so she snatched a piece of buttered toast from Alessar’s breakfast plate. He pressed her gloves into her free hand and she obediently pulled them after licking her fingers clean of the butter and crumbs. Taking her cloak from the hook above the fireplace, she shrugged it on and pulled the hood back so that her face was not hidden. She pulled her hair out from under the fabric, letting it fall loosely to her waist.

Alessar added a couple of new items to Arianna’s pack so that they could share the load. She pulled the pack easily onto her back and walked ahead of Alessar all the way up the hall and down the stairs. Alessar was still trudging down the stairs behind her when her green eyes fixated on a huge helmet mounted on the wall like deer antlers. Two great big bull horns curved out of the sides, pointing threateningly towards her–the helm of a Skulk.
